The Philippines Brings Home More Medals at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad

The Philippines brought home 1 Silver Medal, 3 Bronze Medals, and 2 Honourable Mention
Awards at the 65 th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held on July 11-22, 2024 at Bath, United
Kingdom. The Silver Medal was won by Jerome Austin Te of Jubilee Christian Academy. The Bronze
Medals were obtained by Alvann Walter Paredes Dy, Luke Sebastian Sy, and Filbert Ephraim Wu, who
are students from Saint Jude Catholic School, Grace Christian College, and Victory Christian
International School, respectively. Last, but not the least, the Honourable Mention Awards were received
by Ervin Joshua Bautista and Mohammad Nur Casib, who are students from Southville International
School and Colleges and Philippine Science High School – Central Mindanao Campus, respectively.

The Philippine Team was led by Team Leader Ms. Hazel Joy Shi of University of the Philippines
Diliman (UP Diliman) and Deputy Leader Mr. Kerish Villegas of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU).
Other trainers for the Team were Dr. Richard Eden (ADMU), Dr. Christian Paul Chan Shio (ADMU), Dr.
Louie John Vallejo (UP Diliman), Dr. Jerome Dimabayao (UP Diliman), Mr. Misael Jose Fisico, Dr.
Russelle Guadalupe (UP Diliman), Mr. Carlo Francisco Adajar (University of Georgia), Mr. Gari Lincoln
Chua, Mr. Lu Christian Ong (ADMU), Mr. Sean Anderson Ty, Mr. Vince Jan Torres, Mr. Immanuel
Josiah Balete (UP Diliman), Mr. Carl Joshua Quines, Ms. Mikaela Angelina Uy (Stanford University),
Mr. Vance Eldric Go, and Mr. Raphael Dylan Dalida (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The
Team’s participation in the IMO is a joint undertaking of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines
(MSP) and the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

The IMO is the most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students, and is the
oldest of all the international science olympiads. The IMO was first held in 1959 in Romania, and has
been held annually in various host countries. This year, there were 609 participating students hailing from
108 countries and territories. This makes the IMO the largest of all math competitions in terms of
participating nations. Each country can only send at most six contestants, along with the Leader and the
Deputy Leader, who will evaluate the work of the contestants and coordinate their scores.

The Philippines tied with Sweden at rank 50, in the company of Switzerland (48), Czech
Republic (49), Lithuania (52), and South Africa (53). The five highest performing countries were the
