The Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP) has announced the Philippines’ contestants to the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) which will be held this July 3 to 14, 2018, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The country’s contestants are the following students.

1. Emmanual Osbert Cajayon, Emilio Aguinaldo College
2. Kyle Patrick Dulay, Philippine Science High School – Main Campus (Click here for Mr. Dulay’s IMO Records)
3. Andres Rico Gonzales III, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and De La Salle University Integrated School

4.Albert John Patupat, De La Salle University Integrated School (Click here for Mr. Patupat’s IMO Records)
5. Shaquille Wyan Que, Grace Christian College (Click here for Mr. Que’s IMO Records)
6. Sean Anderson Ty, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School (Click here for Mr. Ty’s IMO Records)

Dulay is one of the country’s first IMO Gold Medalists, a feat he achieved in 2016. Dulay, Patupat, Que, and Ty were part of the 2017 Team, all of whose six contestants won a medal in the IMO, placing the Philippines at its highest rank two years in a row: 17th out of 111 countries. Patupat has won two IMO Silver medals, while Que and Ty have both won an IMO Bronze medal. On the other hand, Cajayon and Gonzales are participating in the IMO for the very first time. Of the six, only Gonzales and Ty have not yet graduated from high school, and could thus still qualify for the IMO next year.

The Team was chosen at the end of the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Camp (MOSC), a rigorous training program handled by members of the MSP. Invited to the program were the National Finalists of the Philippine Mathematical Olympiad which concluded this January 2018.

The group will be led by Dr. Richard Eden as Team Leader, and Dr. Christian Paul Chan Shio as Deputy Team Leader. Both are from the Mathematics Department, Ateneo de Manila University. They will also be accompanied by MOSC trainer Mr. Carlo Francisco Adajar of the Institute of Mathematics, University of the Philippines – Diliman.

The IMO is the most prestigious international mathematics competition for high school students all over the world, held yearly in a different country. The number of participating countries has grown from seven in 1959 (Romania) to 111 in 2017 (Brazil).

The MOSC and the Team’s IMO Participation are projects of the MSP and the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute.
